Buying a Ford R10E-1 1949-50 transmission for a rat rod or flathead project can be an intriguing endeavor, as it brings a unique contribution to the aesthetic and mechanical aspects of the build. However, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons before making a purchase.

Pros:

1. Authenticity and uniqueness: The R10E-1 transmission adds a distinct vintage look to your rat rod or flathead project, enhancing its character and giving it an authentic feel.

2. Durability: Ford transmissions are known for their long-lasting nature. In these cases, the R10E-1 transmission has been proven to perform reliably for many years, making it a solid foundation for your project.

3. Availability: While older Ford transmissions, specifically the R10E-1, may be harder to find than their modern counterparts, they are still accessible through classified ads, restoration shops, and auction sites.

Cons:

1. Requires rebuilding: Pre-owned or salvaged Ford R10E-1 transmissions generally require extensive rebuilding. This not only involves the cost and time of obtaining the necessary parts and skills but also the risk of relying on a third-party rebuilder for quality work.

2. Finding compatible parts: Sourcing the correct components, such as gaskets, seals, and synchros, for the R10E-1 transmission can be a challenge. In some cases, these parts may be expensive or only available from vintage Ford specialists.

3. Tooling and workspace requirements: Rebuilding the R10E-1 transmission demands access to specialized tooling and sufficient workspace, which can be costly investments and space-consuming.

In conclusion, purchasing a used Ford R10E-1 1949-50 transmission for a rat rod or flathead project comes with several advantages such as a unique look, durability, and availability. On the other hand, disadvantages include the need for extensive rebuilding, sourcing challenging parts, and requiring specialized tooling. Ultimately, the decision to buy an R10E-1 transmission depends on factors such as your budget, project goals, and resources.

Recommendation:

If you're committed to retaining the original transmission for your rat rod or flathead build and have the necessary skills, resources, and time to rebuild it, then purchasing a used Ford R10E-1 transmission could be a rewarding choice. However, evaluating local classified ads and online marketplaces for affordable transmission options and assessing the cost-effectiveness of third-party rebuilders can provide significant savings and better results. Keep in mind that investing in the right expertise and tools throughout your project will ultimately pay off in the long run.

Details:

I loosened the solenoid on side and gears move smoothly. It came with some 1950 Ford items I purchased. I rotated it in gear and moves but seamed stick a little. I will drop this off on a pallet to shipper if the customer can't pick it up.

I m not sure how it works, I was told worked well. I have a Ford overdrive 3 Speed transmission up for offer, pulled the cover, gears look good and it shifts.
