Review GENERAL MOTORS Zf Speed Manual Transmission 72k Used Blue Tag fits CORVETTE 1990–1996

The General Motors S6-40 96 Corvette ZF Manual Transmission is a legendary piece of automotive history, specifically designed for the 1990 Corvette models (90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, and 96). This transmission system, with its 72,000-mile odometer, is a testament to its durability and reliability.

The ZF transmission, a product of the renowned German manufacturer ZF Friedrichshafen AG, is a 6-speed manual gearbox that delivers smooth, precise shifts. The S6-40 model, in particular, is known for its robustness, capable of handling the powerful engines that come with the Corvette. The 6-speed configuration offers a perfect balance between fuel efficiency and performance, making it an excellent choice for both daily commuting and high-speed driving.

The transmission features a short-throw shifter, which provides a satisfyingly tactile feel and makes gear changes quick and effortless. The synchronizers are well-engineered, ensuring smooth transitions between gears, even under heavy load. The gear ratios are carefully calibrated to provide optimal acceleration and top-end speed, making the Corvette a formidable performer on the road.

The S6-40 transmission is also known for its durability. It uses high-quality materials and advanced manufacturing techniques to ensure longevity. The gear teeth are hardened and heat-treated for strength, while the synchros and bearings are precision-machined for smooth operation. The transmission fluid is regularly changed to maintain lubrication and prevent wear and tear.

In terms of maintenance, the S6-40 transmission is relatively straightforward. Regular oil changes, inspection of the drivetrain components, and checking the clutch system are all essential maintenance tasks. With proper care, this transmission can last for many years and miles, providing reliable service and ensuring that the Corvette remains a joy to drive.

In conclusion, the General Motors S6-40 96 Corvette ZF Manual Transmission is a high-performance, durable, and reliable gearbox that offers a smooth and engaging driving experience. With its 6-speed configuration, short-throw shifter, and robust construction, it is an excellent choice for enthusiasts who demand the best from their Corvette. Whether you're cruising down the highway or pushing your Corvette to its limits on the track, the S6-40 transmission will provide the power and precision you need to enjoy every mile.

Pros of buying a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZF manual transmission (General 1 LT1 5.7L V8 engine, 6-speed manual transmission, 72K miles):

1. Powerful engine: The LT1 V8 engine is known for its power and reliability, providing a thrilling driving experience.

2. Iconic design: The Corvette's sleek, timeless design is a classic that never goes out of style.

3. Rear-wheel drive: The rear-wheel drive system offers excellent handling and traction.

4. Manual transmission: A 6-speed manual transmission allows for a more engaging driving experience and better control over the car.

5. Relatively low mileage: With only 72K miles, the car has a good amount of life left in it.

Cons of buying a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZF manual transmission (General 1 LT1 5.7L V8 engine, 6-speed manual transmission, 72K miles):

1. Age and wear: Being a 30-year-old car, it may have some wear and tear, and some parts may need replacement.

2. Maintenance costs: Older cars can be more expensive to maintain due to the availability and cost of parts.

3. Fuel economy: The LT1 V8 engine is not known for its fuel efficiency, and the manual transmission may not help much in this regard.

4. Limited features: The 1990 Corvette may not have some modern features that newer cars have, such as airbags, power seats, or navigation systems.

5. Depreciation: Older cars, especially classic models like the Corvette, can depreciate faster due to their age and limited demand compared to newer models.

Conclusion: Buying a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZF manual transmission can be a great investment for someone who appreciates classic cars, loves driving manual transmissions, and is willing to put in the time and money to maintain and upgrade the vehicle. The powerful engine, iconic design, and engaging driving experience are all major pros, but the age and wear, maintenance costs, fuel economy, limited features, and potential depreciation should be considered as well. If you are willing to deal with these cons, then a 1990 Corvette ZF manual transmission could be a fantastic addition to your collection.

Recommendation: Before making a decision, it is recommended to have the car inspected by a trusted mechanic to assess its condition and potential issues. Also, research the market value of similar cars to ensure you are getting a fair price. Additionally, consider your personal preferences and driving habits to determine if a classic Corvette with a manual transmission is the right fit for you.

About 2 quarts to fill it Mazola works well. This trans WILL NOT FIT THE C4 ZR-1 LT-5 Small block Chevy is fine. Good six speed ZF trans out of a 1996 Corvette with the LT-4 350 engine. I will NOT take trans back unless GM recommended oil is used.

I did not drive the 96 Corvette, but trans turns fine in all gears by hand, no noises or crunchiness.
